gripping, it generally doesn't burn. It can be if you get cheap shit, are a pussy or you have simply never had anything over 5% abv. If you're used to any other spirit, whisky should be no different. I find with cask strengths you get a bit of heat from the alcohol since it is like 65% if you're sipping it. If you're all worried about the girls loling at you because you aren't used to it, drink it at home with friends. It does take a bit of time before you really start to pick out and enjoy all the flavours. Maybe 3 of 4 times and I was right into whisky and was hooked.
Any Light beer is about the opposite end of the spectrum from whisky. It just may not be your thing but if you really want to give 'er a shot, I'd suggest get a bottle of Jameson 12yo, sip it at home and get used to the higher alcohol content. If you still hate it, then its not your thing.
BTW whisky is how the Scots and Canadians spell it, whiskey is how the Irish and Americans spell it.
Now see here, I've been drinking whisky/whiskey for some time now. I love the stuff. But I found drinking a (cracked, but closed) ~20 year old bottle of Old Crow that was property of my long-deceased step-grandfather that it tasted great, but felt, at the same time, like it was searing my throat and ripping my guts out. Never had a whiskey done that to me a'fore. Hence, delicious gasoline.
I might add, I've no problem drinking the likes of absinthe neat @ ~68%. It goes down smooth--feels like a baby's laughter. Maybe it was just the bottle.
