How have I not seen this thread before? Damn, I can be so lost while loaded.

Anyway, I was a bourbon only boy years ago. Back then it seemed as I heard people talk about Scotch that I may be missing something. So I figured I'd try some. I started with the usual blends, Johnnie, Dewars and that ilk. It frankly sucked, I didn't get it so I gave up.

Flask forwards to three years ago. I am sitting out a game or two at the local paintball field, resting my weary old ass in the hot July sun. A paintball buddy and fellow lush strolls up to the area I was sitting and makes small talk about our older guns as the younger kids ooo and ahh about how the are made of brass not the light weight aluminum like theirs. As the kiddies todle off for another round or two of shooting one another, my buddy pulls out his everpresent flask and says, "Care for a snort now that the chidren have left?"

"Sure, what is it?", not that that really mattered.

"Scotch" came the reply.

What the hell I thought, once more into the breech. I upended the flask and had a healthy pull. Suddenly there was Smokey, Peaty perfection spreading warmly through my head.

"Holy shit that was fucking fantastic!" I cried. "what is it?"

Laphrioag 25 came the reply.

Suddenly I "got" Scotch.

I should have never bothered with blends and went right for the single malts. I am firmly a peat/smoke head. I can appreicciate and enjoy other type but I'm an Islay man all the way.

The last tree bottles were a Laugavulin 16, a Balvenie 12 Double Wood, and a Bowmore 15. All were good but for me the Laugavulin was pretty even with the Bowmore. Laugy being smokier and more peat with the Bow being more balanced. Although I am a novice at this, Scotch may be my new favorite over bourbon. Time will tell.

It was accidental at first, but I looked at it and decided to leave it alone. Serendipity or some such shit.

If you like peat, go for Ardmore, definitely one of my favourites.

I've found bowmore to be pretty good when drinking with people who are not used to scotch.

Laphroaig 25 isn't Scotch. Laphroaig 25 is SCOTCH. It's up there with the older Port Ellen's, it's a titan.
I personally wouldn't flask that though, my own personal opinion.

Jesus, he has Laphroaig 25 in his flask, what's he have at home? Something in Mr. Macallan's skull?

Been a while, a loooong while, since I've done the Scotch thing. Any recommendations? I'll be likely replenishing the liquor cabinet tomorrow with gin and bourbon.
