gripping, it generally doesn't burn. It can be if you get cheap shit, are a pussy or you have simply never had anything over 5% abv. If you're used to any other spirit, whisky should be no different. I find with cask strengths you get a bit of heat from the alcohol since it is like 65% if you're sipping it. If you're all worried about the girls loling at you because you aren't used to it, drink it at home with friends. It does take a bit of time before you really start to pick out and enjoy all the flavours. Maybe 3 of 4 times and I was right into whisky and was hooked.
Any Light beer is about the opposite end of the spectrum from whisky. It just may not be your thing but if you really want to give 'er a shot, I'd suggest get a bottle of Jameson 12yo, sip it at home and get used to the higher alcohol content. If you still hate it, then its not your thing.

BTW whisky is how the Scots and Canadians spell it, whiskey is how the Irish and Americans spell it.

Now see here, I've been drinking whisky/whiskey for some time now. I love the stuff. But I found drinking a (cracked, but closed) ~20 year old bottle of Old Crow that was property of my long-deceased step-grandfather that it tasted great, but felt, at the same time, like it was searing my throat and ripping my guts out. Never had a whiskey done that to me a'fore. Hence, delicious gasoline.

I might add, I've no problem drinking the likes of absinthe neat @ ~68%. It goes down smooth--feels like a baby's laughter. Maybe it was just the bottle.
Wine comes in at the mouth,
And love comes in at the eye;
That's all we shall know for truth
Before we grow old and die.
I lift the glass to my mouth,
I look at you, and I sigh.

I have edited this four times before I hit "submit", because the earlier versions were a lot more rage-filled. Samuel L. Jackson thought I used the term "motherfucker" too often. Having said that...

Hi. You're obviously new around here. I'm ivan. Let me explain a few things to you.

First off, when you start a thread with this condescending a tone, you'd damn well better be on your game. You, my friend, are not.

Do yourself a favor, look around the place for a bit. When you're feeling comfortable in the Pub, venture into The Art Of Getting Hammered. You may be a touch frightened at first. This is natural. Look around and learn. Quite a few of us know whiskey. Maybe even better than you'd guess.

Oh, and in case you're doubting my qualifications, here you go:

That's the best-smelling room in the world. The mash tubs at Maker's Mark. Heaven smells like this.

Thanks Whisk(e)y Guy! I'll try to purchase more better spirits!

They didn't mind that you were standing in the middle of the tub like that?

I've gotta admit I felt that same way when I saw this thread. It's kinda strange to show up here and assume that this forum (of all forums) would need an education on whiskey (of all things). I was going to post my thoughts on that but then I saw that the initial responses seemed to be appreciatory.

I got to stick my finger in and taste the fresh mash.

The initial posts were all Euros and Canadians.

lol ivan, relax. If I was here to shoot people down or troll, I would have been b& weeks ago! I started this thread because there seemed to be not a lot of talk about what goes into different drinks and was more on talking about drinking them. That's cool and all but a little variety isn't a bad thing. Also the internet isn't serious business. If it is, ban me, I won't cry or get all upset.

@GWN I still don't understand delicious gasoline but hey if you like it, that's all that matters. I have yet to have anything at cask strength that wasn't too hot for me. Haven't had Absinthe tho, maybe that's why.

@ gripping don't worry, nothing online really gets to me.

That's cool. The best experience like that I've had was getting to taste new Junipero at Anchor. They also let me eat fresh hops- which turned out to be a bad idea because it completely ruins your palate and all the brewers there cooked us a big Mexican dinner for industry-appreciation night.

Nope- turns out it's a type of liquor. There's more to drink in this world than just beer you know.
